Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales

This active monastery of the Franciscan order is occupied today by 19 cloistered nuns. Founded by Juana de Austria (1535-1573), sister of King Phillip II (El Escorial), this palace is a must see not only for its architecture but also for its remarkable collection of Art, tapestries, paintings and wood sculptures.

There are few daily slots available for this guided-tour only, so you must purchase your ticket as soon as it opens.  For EU and Latin American citizens, it is free on Wednesday and Thursday after 4pm.
